Australian Rules Football has been a integral part of the sporting landscape in Mount Isa since the early 1930s. The first recorded matches were played in 1932, and by 1933, three clubs had been established, reflecting the early growth and strong community interest in the game.
In 1955, a formal league structure was introduced to support the continued development and organisation of the sport within the region. The modern foundation of the competition, however, was established in 1967 with the formation of the North West Australian Football League (NWAFL), providing a structured and sustainable framework for Australian Rules Football in North West Queensland.
In 1969, the league was renamed Mount Isa AFL, strengthening its identity and connection to the local community. The competition continued to evolve over time, and in 2001, it adopted its current name, AFL Mount Isa.
Since its establishment, AFL Mount Isa has played a significant role in fostering participation in Australian Rules Football across the region. The league has been sustained through the ongoing commitment of volunteers, clubs, players, and supporters, contributing to its longevity and continued success.
Today, AFL Mount Isa remains a vital community-based competition, providing opportunities for both men and women to participate in the sport. It continues to promote the values of inclusion, sportsmanship, and community engagement, while honouring a proud history spanning more than 90 years in regional Queensland.
